Over £SO worth of goods were stolen by thieves who broke into, the .tobacconist's shop of Mr J. T. Cooper, of Christchurch, early oar Sunday morning. The thieves were evidently practised -hands and/took only goods that would be easily disposed of. Their haul included over 2000 cigarettes', many tins of tobacco, pipes, /shaving equipment and other articles. '

With the good weather prevailing there is every prospect of an early run of whitebait in the local river. Wise fisherman will have their nets ready in, case of emergency. Paterson’s are offering the correct mesh netting in 80in. at Is 9d and 2s 3d yard. This is a proved netting and new season’s stock and intending fishermen; would be wise to procure early.—Advt. •

At the ploughing matches held ip Takapau, Hawke’s Bay, William Lorraine Setters, employed by Mr T. Power, of Takapau, was awarded fust prize for, the best double-furrow ploughing in Class B: first prize for best ploughing under. 20 years-first prize for best fairing Class B; first prize for straightest ploughing in Class B, and the gold medal. The judge, Mr Gilbert McKay, of Hastings, said that -Setters was a Flock House lad, who was a credit to the institution, his employer, and himself. His work was outstandng, and showed sympathy and confidence between man and horses, without which such work was impossible. Setters would be nj champion ploughman ,and that spelled success in New Zealand and in any part of the world. Setters was horn in Grimsby, less than 18 years ago, and came to New Zealand in 1929. His father was a petty officer in the Royal Navy, and was killed in action when with the Hood Battalion in Gallipoli.
