U.S. WAR DEBTS PRAISE FOR LAUSANNE TREATY (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) WASHINGTON,. July 23. Senator Borah, in a i-adio broadcast discussing roparaionsj jand war debts to-night, praised the.-Lausanne Agreement as /v “harbinger o" peace anti hope for humanity.” He urged the early convocation of an international conference with American participation to, discuss important economic matters, including reparations and debts.
Jt is noted that this is in direct opposition t.o the State Department’s latest utterances that such a conference should he limited to pure economic questions. Senator Borali again developed his favourite theme that “Disarmament is the test, and that, the response to Lausanne is at Geneva.” He intimated that a United States revision of debts might be necessary and desirable, “If the policies initiated at Lausanne aro carried forward, there will be a time
when it will be distinctly in the interest of the United States to consider again the question of debts,” ’he said. But. he definitely predicated debt cancellation upon the settlement of j “other war problems,” Senator Botah stressed the improvement of; the international situation upon domestic economies, and frankly stated America must take a course calculated to operate to her best advantage. SENATOR BORAH’S PROPOSAL. IMMEDIATE WORLD CONFERENCE WASHINGTON, July 23. : Senator Borah, proposes an immediate world conference to consider the revision or cancellation of the war debts integrally with a programme for settling other post-war problems. He says such a conference should have' the power to deal with reparations, debts, disarmament, the -re-establishment of the gold standard, the stabilisation of silver in the Orient, and other questions. He says that soonei: or later the war guilt clause must disappear. He adds: “If the policies initiated at Lausanne are to be carried forward, the time is coming when, in the interests of the United States, the people will reconsider the question of debts.”
