SLUICE GATES CLOSED

A reward of ,i£lo is offered by the Christchurch Drainage Board for infonnation that may load to the arrest of seme malicious (individual. On Monday morning last the closing of ff'uiee gatcis caused the collapse of 'eighty feet of the carrier, at, the board’s sewage farm at Bromley. It is estimated that £l5O will be required for .-.replacements and other incidental repair work. It wa,s reported to a meeting of the board last evening that when an employee fifbt' noticed that the i flow in the distribution carriers had ceased hb immediately investigated and' found that the suffice gates had been closed on the concrete carrier, thus causing the sewage to flow over the top of the walls and over the embankment. The by-pass , gates were opened, but too late to prevent the carrier being undermined. A considerable hole was. scoured out and about eighty feet of the carrier collapsed. Steps were immediately taken; to divert the sewage into the old racthrough the sandhills leading to /the tanks.
