EXTRA WAGE TAX
IF RATIONS ARE INCREASED. ADVICE FROM MINISTER. (Per Press Association —r Copy right.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 15. Tlie Mayor of Christchurch, Mr D. G. ■Sullivan, M-P'., has received a telegram to-day from the Minister for Employment, Mr Hamilton, stating that -any increase in th© relief rations now being granted eould be given only if there were a further increase in the unemployment tax ' imposed, - and that it was even, doubtful whether the present scale of relief could be maintained without an increase in taxation.
Th© Minister’s telegram was in rep'y to Mr £uUivan’a communicatio-n, fol-ibW-ing the conference that was held at Christchurch, .to consider the. Government's rations scheme. ■
/Mr Sullivan intends to call the conference together again to consider the iMi-nistcv's telegram, and to discus* possible -steps to assist in securing more adequate relief for those in need.
