AN OUTSTANDING STATESMAN.
(United Press Association—By Electric. le.egraphi-Copyright.)
VANCOUVER- July 15,
Mr Bruce’s spee-h at a -Government lunch at Victoria hag confirmed a- great impression that he created on previous visits. He was hailed as one of the outstanding Emp re statesmen by speakers repres-mung Dominion provincial Governments. Mr Bruce was cheered for saying the Ottawa Conference was the most important conference ever held by British people. He said: “We want to help the world during this p.riod of doubt and darkness.,, We have shown the world what can be . done by the British group of nations, but only by international action can d.fficulties confronting the nations be overcome “It is the supreme opportunity of British statesmanship. The world calls again upon British statesmanship to find a way out, I hope we will be Worthy of the opportunity. Previous attempts to huild un Elmpire trade liivfe failed from Chambetiaiti’s ti'ffie to tile 1935 Conference. The reasons fol' the failure in the past have now disappeared. Wis will be courting failure if we go to Ottawa determined to gain something for ourselves at the expense of Other parts of the Empire.”
N.Z. BID FOR BUTTER QUOTA,
CANADA WILL BE NEUTRAL
-OTTAWA, July 14. Canada is likely to assume a more or fess neutral attitude in regard to New Zealand’s request for a butter quota, when the request was indicated by Mr William Goodfell-owj the New Zealand Director of Empire Dairies, on his arrival at Victoria on Thursday, with the' New Zealand delegates to the Economic Conference at Ottawa. Canada exports butter and cheese to , Great Britain. Tjlie Canadian cheese obtains a premium over all the other cheese imported into the United Kingdom. On the other hand, its butter sells at discount as compared with the butter of New Zealand and other countries. Accordingly the tendency of the Agricultural Department here is to encourage the production of cheese and to -limit the production of butter to the domestic demand.
