DUNEDIN, July 10. : Keen interest was aroused in tlie closing, of the gates of the , Kawarau Dam on Saturday night. Word, was received from Cromwell this evening that the river had fallen about three feet in its wider parts, and a little 1 more. in’ the narrower portions of the gorge. Large numbers of men werp engaged in prospecting on the (river banks throughout to-day, but no substantial ' finds of gold were / reported, and the local do not seem, to be unduly optimistic regarding the reoult. ' - ■' Unemployed men will, however, be afforded an opportunity to make reasonable wages for a. sbfjf# time. The gates have-" bee« ' dropped for one week, and mining, operations will proceed between Cromwetl and. Beaumont. The Minister of Mines Hon. C,: E. Macmillan. ,consented to the closing, mainly in the interest of - the unemployed, and it is expected that several hundreds will participate.
