The death occurred at the Buller Hospital, on Tuesday morning,. after a short illness, of- Mr George Griffiths, of Birchfield, aged 77 years. The deceased, who was a native - of Lisbane, Wales, came to New Zealand, at the age of nineteen, and after engaging in farming in the North Island for some time settled at Birchfield. Here he worked as a contractor, and as a sawmiller, and later was a partner in the Iron, and Brass Foundry at Birchfield. During .his residence in the district, the late. Mr Griffiths had filled such offices as Member and Chairman of Buller County Counoiu, Member of Westport Harbour Board, Chairman of Waimangaoa School Committee, and an active member of Buller A. and P. Association. Deceased who wa twice married, is survived by two sons. Frank end Victor, of Birchfield, and a daughter, Mrs Harrison of Papanui, also two brothers, James and Evan, and two sisters, Mrs Harrington (Gisborne) and Mrs Bearnot (Wellington). One son, James, was killed in France during the Great War and another, William died while returning to the Dominion from the war.
