The, annual conference of the Public .Service Association was opened this morning by the Public. Service Commissioner, wliQ 1 was asked by t Premier to act and apologise, for Insunavoidable absence. ~. jVlr Vescheffelt stressed that at no time in the history of the Public Ser- _ vice, was morale more needed m the service. Every officer should throw his full weight.,to, support the Gov-; ernment during -the present crisis. He impressed that sections of the press, and journalists in search of something to /write about, had by attacks, versely affected the prestige of the' Service and so prejudiced rec.imfl ment. ? , He said entry to the Service should be looked on us an entry to a career, and a. sense of-public duty had to take the place of the most tangible incentives of most other occupation*. He mentioned the question of the financial stability of the various superannuation funds.. It must be apparent to all who had given any study to the question that some drastic alteration must be made in the conditions of retirement, and he asked the Association to give serious consideration to the report-of the National Expenditure Commission, which should soon he available. •
