ART UNION

CITY MISSIONER CRITICISED.

ANGLICAN ARCHBISHOP’S PROTEST.

AUCKLAND, July 2. ’'Coiinileiit on the notion of the Rev. Jasper Calder, Anglican City Missioned, in promoting an art union’ to raise fmul.il-’for mission work is made in the current issue of the “Church Gazette.' 1

An' article-'under the Heading, “Ibid Economics, ;Bad Morals, Rad. Religion,” states: .“We are sure, that ,pur readers, and churchfclk throughput the province, will be. glad to know 1 . that the Archbishop has formally protested against the proposed art union associated in the minds of many with' the City • Mission.”

At its last meeting the Anckhind Clergy Association passed the following resolution, with one dissentient voice: “That members of the Auckland Clergy Association express' their disapproval of the attempt of the City /Missioner to raise funds for charitable purposes by means of a so-called art union.”

j In the last issue of “The IVifter,” the City Missioner states that the ai t union is being conducted in aid of. a fund called The. Jasper Calder Charity , Fund, or Trust Board Incorporated, j and that, this . fund is controlled by himsel.' and; a co-trustee, and that he is ! answerable to no organised body whatsoever for its method o* raising fuwd« or its exponditm'e. This suggests an interesting case of a chml personality, for the,, dty -Missioner. as such, is at j least nominally responsible to the authorities of the diocese, but tlip , Jasper Calder of \this particular fund | is answerable to no organised religious i body whatsoever.
