GIRL’S AWFUL DEATH
SEIZED BY SHARK
SUVA, June 26
A report ' from the town, of Nabukeru in the Yasava Islands, states that a native girl has been eaten by sharks. Two native girls' named Esita and Asena, were fishing near the shore reef, both wearing goggles and diving under the rocks for fish. About three chains .separated- the girls and Esita heard • Asena scream for help. She went to her assistance in water aboqt. three fathoms deep, and when close to the struggling girl in bloodstained water, saw the fins of sharks. A situ, caught hold of Asena, and swam ’with her towards the shore, while the sharks followed, still attacking the wounded girl. Esita managed to tow Asena into shallow • water, and then the sharks dragged her away.
Asena was terribly mutilated and almost dead, and Esita ran •up the shore screaming for help. The whole village turned out, but arrived to find only the girl’s head and some bones. Mr Hicks, in a launch, brought the remains ashore. The sharks are described as of a small vicious and daring snecies.
