A HOLD-UP IN SCOTLAND

BANDIT ESCAPES WITH £llOO.

LONDON, Juno 28.

A gunman with an American accent carried out a daring hold-up at the Commercial Bank of Scotland in Denny, a small town in south-east .Stirlingshire, recently, and got away with £llOO.

The teller, Mr lan Young, and an assistant, Mr James Ferguson, were the only o-ceupants of the bank when a burfy man,. about six feet tall and bearing dark glasses, ‘entered. Mr Young bad taken some money -from the safe and placed it on the counter in readiness for the day’s business. He stooped below the counter to get a ledger,, and on straightening himself saw a stranger pointing a. short doublebarrelled gun at him. The first impression of the hank staff that the whole think was a joke was quickly shattered by the stranger demanding, “Hand over your cash or I shoot.” The man at the same- timeshowed two live cartridges. “I pushed the notes from th e , counter toward him,” Mr Young said, describing his experience, “and he then ordered me to take- tile rest of the money from the safe. With the gun still pointing at my head, I had nq alternative but to deliver up the rest of the notes. The man then quickly made his escape.” Mr Young at once made to follow the thief, hut was delayed by the fact that the fugitive had locked the glass door of the bank behind him. Mr Young reached the street by another door, only in time, to -nop a. car disappearing in a northeriv direction.

About midnight two Glasgow defectives arrested a young man. It is understood that the man had in his possession notes to the value of over £IOOO and a- sporting gun, the barrels of which had been sawn off and the- stock shortened.
