AN EXPLOSION
WRECKS WATER MAIN, • * • KUMA.RA, June 29, On Tuesday nigh's about 11 o'clock the water pipe supplying Kumara with water was blown up and destroyed at the rear of the Globe Hotel, about fifty feet of the pipe having been blown away. Investigations showed that the charge had been placed in a box, at th e top of Dilimm’s Hill, which at one time was used for gauging the water. The explosion did not occur there, however, the charge shifting from 30 to 40 yards down the pipes, before exploding.
The report of the explosion could be heard at Dill man,sfown, about a mile away. A piece of the pipe was hurled against: one of the wooden stringers, to be deeply embedded. Th e town is now without water, but repairs are being carried out and it is expected that the damage will be righted by '.tonight. The pipes are of steel, with a diameter of khirtv inches. \
This is tho second attempt made on the pipe 3, an attempt * about a month ago having failed. A charge was previously placed under the pipes some distance from the site of tho present explosion, but 1 i'c fai'ed to act, and the attempt was discovered, without any harm resuiting.
