N.Z. SHEEP
PRAISED AT SYDNEY SHOW. (Australian Press Association ) SYDNEY, June 23'. At the sheep show, Mr D. Sidey of .Glenovis, Canterbury, obtained firsts and seconds for Southdown ram,' any age, r,nd Southdown ewe any age. The judge commented that they were the best lot of Southdown,s ever exhibited at Sydney, and were just the type of sheep required for the fat lamb trade, the introduction of which into Australia, would enable the growers here to compete on a new footing with their formidable rivals in New Zealand.
' Mr D Grant, of Elloughton, Tim..aru, exhibited Border Leicesters. He obtained first prize for a ram under two years, shorn within six weeks of the show, and several seconds.
DECREASE IN PAST YEAR.
WELLINGTON, June 23
The Department of Agriculture publishes in the Gazette to-night an interim return of the sheep in the Dominion on April 30th. The total number j)f sheep in the North Island at that date was estimated at 15,021,614 as compared with 15,886,876, which was the final return for 193). For the South Island-.the figures are 13,584,575 and 13,905,640 respectively.
The totals for the Dominion are:— 28,600,219 for the year, and 29,792,508 for last year, which shows a decrease of 1,186,297.
