TAINTED MEAT
VERACITY OF REPORT DOUBTED
[By Telegraph, Per Press Association.]
AUCKLAND, June 23
Auckland shipping representatives and exporters are sceptical of the “tainted meat” report, and they scout the idea that arsenic leaked from hides stored above the refrigerated hold. A prominent bide exporter said that, never in his experience, had he known arsenic to be used for curing hides. Salting was the universal practice. Leakage from brine in refrigerated sections of the ship was not 'uncommon, but seldom sufficient to stain any great portion of carcases. However, brine and chemical solution in the coils did not contain arsenic. If that had been the practice there would have been trouble long beford this.
