BIG LANDSLIDE

2000 TONS ON REWANUI LINE,

MINE IDLED IN MEANWHILE

GREYMOUTH, June 21

A big slip ooeu. red on the DunollieRewanxii railway line yesterday afternoon about one and a-quarter miles from the Dunollie station, or at the 5 miles 50 chains peg on the line. The siip was caused through the heavy showers which have fallen over the Week-end, and just prior to the time that the slide occurred a particularly heavy downpour was experienced.

Jt is estimati d that 2COO tons of material came down, but as the coun-

try above appears very loose and cracked, it is possible that more will follow. The scene of the subsidence is a cutting, and this will make the work of clearing the debris doubly difficult, for, instead of being just shovelled away, it will have to be loaded on the trucks and carried away, and this work is anticipated .to take three or fourda vs.

The slip occurred shortly after the afternoon coal special had gone down, and the result was that the Rewanui | end of the line was left without any engine, forcing, the. miners, who were doing their fir.sfc dry’s work after the coal strike, to walk home. j The Railway Department advised last t evening that a work train would go out this morning to dear the debris, which is composed of large rocks and clay, 1 arid which is piled approximately twenty feet deep in the cutting. This work will take several days, and in the meantime the morning and afternoon trains to Rwauni will stop at the point - of obstruction.

The Superintendent ot the State Mines, Mr I. James, stated that the slip would necessitate a stoppage of the Rewanui .(Liverpool) mine until jsuoh time as it is cleared.
