The City Council has decided to institute further cuts in the salaries of higher-salaried officers, cf five and 10 per cent. The proposals made by the Estimates Committee were as follows:
In order to keep in employment cas many men as possible the following reductions in salaries should apply throughout the Corporation services with the exception of officers under awards: —On all existing salaries over £3OO and up to £4OO per annum, a reduction of five per cent; on all existing salaries over £4OO per annum, a reduction of 10 per cent., provided that in no case is an officer’s salary to be reduced below that of another officer who was previously receiving less than the first named officer. Nobody wished to reduce salaries, said nTr Hislop but Unless that were done there would be-no alternative hut fob the council to dismiss more men. The Estimates Committee were agreed, except that Councillor Mokeen had recorded his dissent, / Councillor Forsyth said it had been understood that salaries would not bo reduced below £3OO. The report was adopted on the casting vote 1 of the Mayor.
