RED CANDIDATE IN COURT.
QUESTION OF PAYMENTS MADE
AUCKLAND, June 20.
An echo of the last Parliamentary elections was heard at the Police Court when James Henry Edwards, who stood as a Communist candidate for the Auckland Central seat last December, was involved. Edwards was charged that on Mai ch 4 being a candidate for election to the House of Representatives, he failed within seventy days after the results of the election had been declared to transmit- a true account of all P a y~ ments made by him. Counsel for Edwards said defendant had only been served with the summons' yesterday. Accordingly ho obtained an adjournment until June 24.
ALLEGED BREACH OF ACT
ASHBURTON, June 21
A challenge has been lodged with the Returning Officer in respect to the election expenses of Mr J. Connolly, M.P., a breach of the Electoral Act being alleged in that- the expenses, either personally, or on his behalf, exceeded £2OO. The returning officer is investigating, his finding to be submitted to the Crown Law Officers before further action is taken.
