OPERATIC SOCIETY

“MERRIE ENGLAND” PRODUCTION FOR UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF FUND, ■ , The formation of; the Hokitika Amateur Operatic, Society, has met with the wide approval of residents of this town, and. many are pleasantly. anticipating the production of “Merrie England" which will take place in about three months’ time. Such an organisation is certainly most desirable in any town, as it provides a welcome outlet for the vocal talent, besides bringing together the young people in pleasant recreation. It is hoped, with the support of the local public to make thi(s a permanent institution, giving one, or, if possible, two performances each year. The services of the performers are given voluntarily, and all proceeds are • to be devoted to local charitable purposes, although the Society is not as. sociated with any church or public institution.

Successful productions of- a similar nature have been given here in the past, and it is intended this year, in view of the amount of unemployment and stringency of essential comforts to devote the proceeds to the Mayor’s Unemployment Fund. The work chosen for the first, performance, “.Merrie England,” is llf 1 ’ the well-known composer, of light music, Edward German. The music is.bright and very charming, while the libretto gives full scope for humour* and spectacle. The chorus has made excellent progress and has _almost mastered its task. The work of production and the formation of the orchestra will be taken in hand as soon as band parts arrive, in order to allow of performance in September. As royalties are demanded in advance of performance, the Society is extremely grateful to those citizens who have so generously, consented to act as guarantors.
