M’Laren was convicted on a charge of stealing furniture and a sewing machine, valued at £39, the property of Catherine Elizabeth O’Rourke, on May 10.
Chief-Detective Carroll said that Mrs O’Rourke, the owner of the furniture was living apart from her husband. The furniture was in the house occupied hv the husband, who received a visit from the woman M’Laren. She was left, on the premises, when O’Rourke went away for a fortnight to work at the Waimakariri. and her instructions were to lock up the house. When O’Rourke returned he found her still on the premises, and the furniture removed. M’Laren’s .story was that O’Rourke engaged her to clean the place, and gave her the furniture in payment. Even if that was so O’Rourke had no right to give the. furniture away. It, belonged to his wife.
