PROTEST MADE

TO GOVERNMENT ON SUBJECT OF IMMIGRATION. (By Telegraph—Per Brest A ssoeiation) WESTPORT, June 15. Last week Mr H. E.. Holland, M.P. addressed tire . following letter to the. Minister of Immigration, and also sent a copy to the Prime Minister : ‘T have just received a copy of 'T..e Caithness (Scotland) Courier, 1 for January 15 last, in which the following advertisement appears:—

“ ‘Farm Labourers and . Domestics wanted lor Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Part or whole of fare advanced and work guaranteed by the respective Governments. Expert advice and strictest privacy assured. Bookings by post receive eame careful attention as. if we had a personal call. Official Authorised Agents for all Steamship Companies.—John W. Smith, Agent Accredited by Government to attend to assisted and nominated passengers.’ “As you will note, the agent, John W. Smith claims that part or whole of the fares ate - advanced ahd work, is guaranteed, .by the New Zealand Government hs Well ats by the Governments of Canada and Australia.' It may Safely, lie ydsvimed-that this advertisement is' appearing’ in other papei's through* out England and Scotland. Jf Mr Smith is not authorised, as he claims to be, by the New' Zealand Government I would respectfully suggest that High Commissioner, in London should be instructed to publish a repudiation of the advertisement and a warning to intending immigrants as to the prevailing conditions in New Zealand.” Mr Hblland has now received the following interim reply from the Prime Minister: “I am in receipt of your letter of the 6th instant, enclosing copy of one sent to the Hon. '• the Minister of Immigration regarding the advertisement which appeared in the newspapers in Scotland, J f note the request which you have made, ancl shall be glad to go into it with the Hon. Minister of Immigration.”
