ALL BLACKS LOSE
IN BIG SCORING MATCH. GOOD WIN FOR, WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Per Prets Association) WELLINGTON, June 15. The Wellington rep. fifteen this bftempon defeated the All Black combination by 36 points to 23. The form of the New Zealand team cannot be accepted as being the best that they are capable of. The forwards were sluggish in their play, while the backs’ combination was poor. Obviously the Warn were concerned over taking care of skin and limb. Tlie All Black forwards were beaten in the .scrums and the lint-outs for most of the game. The half time score was Wellington 23; New Zealand 13. Lilburne, Caughe.v, Kilby and Max were the only AH Blacks who were displaying scoring ability. Ball, the All Black, who was playing for Wellington, scored four tries. MacDonald played first-class Rugby for Wellington. Neal kicked seven goals. Procter replaced Williams and Man-. Chester replaced Hore in the course of the game. Neither of the All Blacks to go off, however, received an injury likely to affect his play in future. The reason why the form of the New Zealand team cannot he acceptedns the best they are capable of is he* cause at no stage did it- ever reach a good club standard. While the forward* played like sluggards, the efforts at combination among the backs were poor. Allowing for the fact that many of the New Zealanders war taking care of skin and limb, something better was expected of them. The forwards were beaten* for the ball in the scrums and lineouts, and for mor,t of the game the Wellington pack was playing over them..
The All Blacks’ weakest feature was their tackling. Few of the side made genuine attempts to bring their m e u down, and Wellington turned this lapse to full profit. The Wellington team played a fine game, the best being Tindall, MacDonald, Ball (who scored four tries) and Neal (who kicked seven goals). Early in the game, Kilby sent the All Black backs away, and Lilbume aud Innes ran Caughey into position, the Auckland man scoring near tlie po«ts. Collins goaled.
MacDonald then figured in a clever run which heat Caughey and AAUUiams, but Stiver knocked on. Lilburne then cut through the Wellington inside backs, ■ hut Cresswell saved cleverly. However, Wellington were penalised, and Collins placed a penalty goal.— All Blacks 8; Wellington 0. Wellington’s Tibst' l ’Wit* l/ Wa«. brilliantly achieved. The ball swung, out to MacDonald, who badly beat Wiliams. When met by Collins lie centred, and Died rich gathered it up, and score by the posts-,. Nesii goaled.— All Blacks 8; Wellington 5. Williams then retired hurt,, and before his place was filled, Wellington executed a movement down the vacant sideline, and scored, MacDonald gained possession following a lineout,, and, with no wing three-quarter marking him, he had a clear run till he drew Collins, and then he passed infield to Tindall, who crossed. Neal missed with the kick g-All Blacks 8; Wellington 8.
Procter then came on to replace Williams. A crisp piece of passing by their backs gained the lead for Wellington. Tindall sent his backs away, and Neal completely cut Jnnes out. The ball went to Stiver, and then to Piedrich, and bo Hall, who crossed at the corner. Neal gociled.—Wellington 13; All Backs 8.
Lambourne was injured, and he was eplaced in the Wellington pack by Jydder. Kilby had Wellington deending, and Purdue was prominent in ;ood work. The New Zealand forwards gave Kilby the ball from a crum, and lie and Lilburne engaged u smart passing, which brought Caugie_y into position for a try -by the xp;ts. Collins, goaled, making the cores thirteen all. After good work by Page, AlaeDonild, Tindall, Killeen and Diedrich, jail crossed to score, and Neal convert'd.—Wellington 18; AH Blacks 13. Then Ball gained possession and >eat two men. before side-steppiug Hollins, and he went over with Caugipy vainly trying to pull him down. Meal goaled, making the half time scores: —Wellington 23; AH Backs 13. piny had not long been in progress (gain -when Ball evaded a tackle by j Builock-Douglas arid passed infield to Page. Hore,-who had received a knock on tlie bac-k left the field, and was replaced bv Manchester. Wellington added to their score when Neal goaled from a penalty. Lilburne affected a. good save, but a second Wellington rush ended, in Reid I scoring, and Nenl goaled.—Wellington j m : All Blacks 13. I New Zealand’s score was.then raised, by Procter, who, following concerted work by Lilburne and Innes, struggled over with two men hanging on to him. | Collins goaled.—Wellington .30; All j Blacks 18. , , i Jessop, Max and Cottrell engaged m . short passing, which gained ground, and from a- succeeding ruck Max broke away. Cottrell arid Manchester both handled before Max took it again, and he sent Manchester over, near the posts. Jt was a fine piece of work by Max. Collins goaled-—Wellington 36; All Blacks 23. Further efforts by New Zealand to add to their score failed. Mi- A. Do Clifton was referee. The men who retired hurt suffered only temporary disablement
