Macmillan, has received from Mr Purdy, secretary of the West Coast miners’ district council, a telegram to the effect that the present dispute is national in character, suggesting the only solution is an unconditional conference and requesting the Minister to assist in arranging such -a conference. The Minister has replied “As, in my opinion, there was no justification for striking, a-nd as the matter of a conference is solely one between the coal owners and coal miners’ unions, I am not prepared to intervene at prer.ent.”
