SHEARERS’ AWARD

A meeting of workers in the shearers’ industry was held, to-day, at Detune, to discuss the rates of pay for shearers and shed hands next season. The Secretary of the New Zealand Workers’ Union (Mr Cook) said stibisequentfv that there wn.s nothing for publication, arising out of the meeting.

Several inquiries have been received in Auckland during the pa,st few weeks from Australia for Clydesdales, which suggests that farmers are replacing the, tractor with horses. The Clydesdale is that medium and active type of draught horse That for countless years was part of the farm outfit. That was before the war. Tho coming of the. tractor dealt almost a death blow to the breeding of Clydesdales in New Zealand, and soon the utility horse of the fanner bad practically disappeared. The spring sales held each year in the Waikato, when any number up to 1500 horses, light and heavy were auctioned, and buyers from various parts of the Dominion attended, soon fell away. '

APPOINTMENT OF ASSESSORS

Captains L. 0. IT. AYorrall and A. T. Dowell have been appointed assessors for (he Magisterial inquiry into the loss of the Kapouga. The inquiry opens here oil Monday.
