PRODUCTION IN THE EMPIRE.
A BIG DECLINE IN 1931

Production of cotton in all of the Empire fields, except Uganda, fell off considerably in 1931. The British Cotton Growing Association, in its annual report, attributes the decline in isome instances to unfavourable climatic conditions, and in others to a disinclination to grow cotton at the unremuneirative prices prevailing. Uganda’s yield was 200,200 bales from 739,600 acres under cotton. It maintains that Protectorate’s outstanding position among' the cotton-producing countries of the Empire, and shows gains as regards output and quality, The total estimated production of cotton grown in new fields in the British Empire in 1931. in bales of 400 pounds was 490,20 Q bales.
