In the course of pn address to the members of the Wellington Section or the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers, Mr Furkert (Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department) staged that the remedial work at Arnpuni so far had been carried out at approximately £150,000 below the estimate. The estimate was announced, during a long debate in Parliament upon the proposals, at £500,000, so that Die cost of the work designed to remedy the weakness which developed suddenly in June, 1030, has been, without the con. trol gate, £350,000.
