PLUNKET SOCIETY

HOKITIKA SUB-BRANCH

REPORT ON YEAR’S WORKING

The past year shows steady progress for the Society in this district, as evidenced by the increase in tile number of babie.i under the supervision. The Pluhkat Nurses, Mrs Geo and Miss* Pritchett, have been untiring in their\ efforts to he.p the motheis and tne babies, their work being especially difficult at times owing to the con- ■ tinned wet weaklier. We tender them oar sincere thanks. The main effort of the year was the Piunket Bull, the proteds of which *(£4l) were considered most satisfactory. We were pleased to have a visit during the ..'ear hom Miss Patrick 'Director of Blanket Nursing) who daring her vis.t investigated local conditions and prospects with regard to the estali.ishment of a resident nurse in Hokitika. Miss Patrick’s report corroborated the opinion of the Council of the Society that the time was not opportune for such an alteration. Matters stand as before, the nurses visiting Hokitika twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Fridays, Ross and Woodstock onto a month and Hariliari once in - two months. The Piunket Room has been improved recently by the addition of some pictures, ancl a screen; and the donation box has proved use- • ful for casual gifts. We regretted very ’ much the departure of our President (Mrs D, D, Hayes) for Nelson. Hep keen interest and willing help were much appreciated ly our committee, In November, Mm Basil Wilson , was appointed President, and*we look for. ward to a long term of ' Usefulness under her guidance. This year the collecting of subscriptions’-lias been particularly difficult; but by. making use of the circulars issued by headquarters, we hope to obtain many new subscribers. Again we wish to thank the local motor companies for conveying tlie Nurses to South Westland free of charge: also the local “Guardian” Company for courtesy in publishing notices; and Mrs Naylor for her kindness in attending to the sale of Emul sion.
