A current impression that children under six years of age coud be admitte to primary schools up to June Ist was corrected in a statement made by 'Mr C. R. Kirk, the secretary to the Canterbury Education Board on Saturday. The impression, seemed to exist in many quarters, but is was quite wrong be, said, No admission under six years of age could be made after May 10th, the date of the passing of the Finance Act, which governed the position. The Act clearly stated ■ that the provision came into force as from the date of its being passed. Children under six admitted to the school after 'May 10th could not be counted a being on the school roll number.
That the passing of the years has not dimmed the memory of the men who sacrificed their lives for their King and country during the Boer War was strikingly demonstrated on Sunday afternoon, when one hundred veterans, returned soldiers and members of the public attended a commemoration service in the Christchurch Cathedral. The service, which was deeply impress, ive, was preceded by a parade, under the command of Lieut-enant-Colonel F. W. W. 'Dawson. About ninety-six veterans, with medals displayed, answered the roll call at the King Edward Barracks, and, with their ranks swelled by forty representatives of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, they marched to the tune of lively airs played by the First Canterbury Regimental Band to the Cathedral. Soveral of the veterans who were too feeble to march brought up the rear in a ear. A fine spirit of independence was displayed by one veteran, who leant heavily on a stick for support. He was offered the . comfort of the official oar, but he preferred to march with his comrades.
