Scottish hopes for the amateur goif championship disappeared whenY Fiddian, th e 23-year English champion > defeated McQuvie on the last green in the semi-final.
Meantime, Deforest, a 25-year Londoner, a son of Baron Deforest, defeated LioneTMunn, aged 47, an Irish veteran, after desperate fight at the 2lst green.' Both of the finalists wer e chosen today to join the Walker Cup team. Fiddian is described as one of the most brilliant golfers that England has produced since Tolley and Wethered. In the Blrtish amateur go'.f championship final, John Deforest defen* Eric Fiddian three up and one to play.
MATCH PLAYED IN RAIN

The amateur golf championship conditions were most unfavourable, their being rain throughout th e match which occupied the record time of six and a half. hour)". The interval was extended to allow of a change of clothing. Deforest early laid the foundation of victory .with a brilliant start winning ■six out of the fir-st seven holes. Fiddian, fighting desperately, .managed to recapture three hol’es, but the effort came too late to avoid unevitable defeat.

STRONG AMERICAN CHALLENGE

A /strong American challenge, including some internationals, has been made for the British Ladies’ Open Golf Championship, at Saunton. Miss Maureen Orcutt, with 73, i* leading in the finst half, with 36 qualifying, holes. Madame Lacoste (formerly M-He. da -La Chume), ex-champion,' with 75, is, second, and Miss Van Vie (77) is third.
'Sixty-four of the competitors with 181 and less qualified. These include Miss Maureen Orcutt (who is the leader) with an aggregate of 151; MhEnid Wilson 154 jwho i-s second) ; M’ss Van Wie 158; Madame Lacoste 153. All of the Americans qualified. Miss La-scelles (186) is an American.
KIRK WINDEYER CUP
N.Z. TEAM’S TRY OUT.
WELLINGTON, May 29
The New Zealand golf team, which leaves on Tuesday next for Sydney, to defend the Kirk Windeyer Cup, enjoyed a good try-out on the Hutt links today, when they w'ere pitted against a 'strong side of local amateurs, wanning the singles by three games to two, and the foursome by two games to one. Brinsden (the Auckland representative) and Silk (the Wanganui piayer) had not previously played on the Hutt course. Following are the results, the names of the New Zealland played being mentioned first:—/ Singles :—Rona Wagg beat T. H. -Hor. ton, 3 and 2; 'H. A. Black beat A. D. ®. Duncan, 3 and 2; J. P. Hornabrook lost to J. H. Brake, 2 down; H. D. Brinsden lost to D. C, Collins, 3 and 2; B. M. Silk beat D. O. Whyte, one up. Foursome ; —Wagg and Black lost to 'Horton and Duncan, 3 and 2 ■ Hornabrook and Brinsden beat Drake and Col fins 2 up; 'Silk and Cook beat Whyte and Petley 3 and 1.
GREYMOUTH BEATS WESTPORT
WESTPORT, May 29
Playing at Westport on Saturday, Greymouth, the challengers, defeated Bidler for the Dallgleish Shield by ten strokes.
