TRAM STRIKE
UNION PRESIDENT TO RESIGN
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, May 28
The resignation of the president of the Christchurch Tramway Union, Mr Mathison and possibly that of some members of the executive, will be received at a general meeting of the union at the Trades’ Hall on Tuesday. Mr Mathison this morning announced his intention of resigning from the presidency in view of the fact that provision is made in the rules of the union that members who cease to be employed by the Tramway Board are unable to hold office. Eight out of feu representatives of the traffic staff on the executive will automatically fall out of union affairs, owing to the fact that they have been dismissed from the service.
The new men who' have been taken on by the Tramway Board are required to become members of the union, but they are not eligible to take office as a member of the executive until they have been financial members for three months. The new election will be held prior to the-expiry of three months. A reply was made this morning by the secretary of the union (Mr E. Snow), to the suggestion made by volunteer tramwaymen who had been dismissed in view 'of the findings of the tribunal, that the unionists were, advocating a retention of those men with families. Mr Snow was definite on the point that what the union advocated was the elimination of the whole of the volunteer element, families or no families.
