MAKE SCENE IN COURT

FAILURE OF MONEYLENDER

LONDON, May 25

There was an extraordinary scene at the conclusion of a meeting at the London Bankruptcy Court of the creditors of Mr Lewis Rose, a moneylender, of Chicksand Street, East. The meeting was largely attended, many of the creditors being women. Considerable indignation was displayed, and the police were called to protect the representatives of Mr Rose, who was not present. Mr Rose had stated that his real name was Lajib Rozenbluin, but for the past thirty-five years has had been known as Lewis Roise. He was a native of Poland. He ocgan business as a journeyman tailor, and in 1911 registered as a moneylender, the business being successful until last June. He then lost €2OOO by had debts. For over twenty years he had conducted slate clubs, and last Christmas paid out about £12,000 in connection witii three. Part of the money he obtained from the bankers. He was pressed for repayment in February, and presented his petition. Mr Rose, who attributed his failure to bad debts and the trade depression, estimated hi* labilities at between CIO,OOO and £II,OOO. His assets consisted of book debts, totalling £4OOO, which might realise €IOOO. The meeting appointed a trustee of Mr Rose’s estate.
