a. ALLEGATION OF FRAUD.

WHANGAREI, May 27

Clifford Spencer Dahlin, alias Power, and Reginald Clarence Williams, alias Reader, were committed for trial yesterday, on charges of conspiring to defraud George Poyner, farmer of Waiotira, of £I2OO, and with stealing £I2OO from Poyner.

It was alleged that the money was paid on account of lour sections at Ponsonby on which they claimed & great glass'works was to be built. Accused -were traced to Australia, and arrested.

INCOME TAX BREACHES.

SEVERAL FINES IMPOSED.

WELLINGTON, May 27

Four charges of failing to furnish income tax returns for the years 1928, 1929, 1930 and 1931 were admitted at the Magistrate’s Court by Maurice Wall and Fenton Patrick Walsh, officials of the Seamen’s Union.

The Assistant Crown Solicitor said that the defendants had never furnished any returns, nor paid any tax, and it was not known by the Department until their incomes were discovered from some other source. Over the last four years, he said, Wall’s income had averaged £360, the total tax on which was £lO, and Walsh had averaged £373 per year, the total tax payable being £ll 15s.’ In these days, said counsel, when taxes were so much in the public eye. there could be ho question of the matter being overlooked. «;«v. Mr Page. S.M., fined each of the defendants £6 on the first charge, and £2 on each of the other charges. They are to pay costs amounting to £lll* on each charge also.
