Shiping.—The schooner Emma Sims which was wrecked on Maria. Island, Wellington on Sunday last, was formerly a trader to Hokitika. It will ho lunemhjred that on her last visit to\ this port, Che Master, Captain. Dar- ' racii, Was washed overooard and drowned.

Kokatahi Land Valuation.—Great indignation is felt here by the settlers of Kokatahi at the high value placed on their land by the Westland County Council, who, in several cases laid revalued it considerably above the Government valuation. Several of the settlers are prepared to offer their properties to the County at this valuation and no doubt when the Court sits on June 5, there will be a large number of the farmers present to object to the present valuation. Railway to Ross.—Word was received in town on Saturday that nearly all the men on tile Ross railway works are to be discharged at the end of next week. It is understood that only half a dozen or so are to be retained. On receipt of the news the Mayor at once sent a telegram to the Minister of Public Works pointing out the •hardships that such action would mean to the men and their families, and respectfully urged that the number now employed should not be reduced as proposed, Mr Rruce, Mayor of Ross, is also making similar represents* sions.

Football,—The annual North v, South Island rugby match will be played at Christchurch on June 3rd. The teams have been announced, the South Island fifteen including Denneliy (Westland).

Law Against Bridge.—A press message advises that a law has been enacted by the Utah legislature making the game of bridge illegal. The penalty is fixed at five years’ imprisonment. Empire Day.—Special services were held in the churches yesterday in celebration ,of Empire Day. A church parade of the First Westland Rifles, and High School Cadets was held at All Saints’ Church the service being conducted by the Revs. H. S. Leach and H. M. Smyth. Golf.—The West'Coast Golf Association will hold a tournament at Omoto on June 3rd, when players from the Hokitika Westport and Greymouth Clubs wil ltake part. The local committee have chosen the following to represent Hokitika :—Mesdames Acheson, "Wilson and J. Macfarlane, Miss Macfarlane, Messrs Newman, Winchester, Wake, Wilson. Eisfelder.
