Squadron Leader Findlay who arrived at noon yesterday from Clir-st-chureh by air. made, an inspection O’ the aerodrome at South Hokitika after lunch. He found that a considerable amount of work had been done since his last visit, and decided to grant ii provisional license for instructional purposes on the field, providing the work at present being carried out is gone ahead with steadily. At present there are a number of hollows and hillocks that require filling or levelling, while the surface in places is soft where previous filling has taken place. Altogether there is a need for further work to be carried out before the field can receive a proper receiving certificate, and the co-operation of the townspeople will he required for this purpose. Yesterday afternoon, prior to leaving Commander Findlay took Mr J. A. Murdoch in tho air for a. run and with Mr A. Nancekivell also in the air on a solo flight, there was the unique spectacle for Hokitika of two aeroplanes in the air at once. Returning to the. landing ground Commander Findlay again took the air with his companion, Mr Yeaton, and left at 2.20 o’clock on his return to Christchurch. r lhe day was beautifully clear for the journey i both ways.

The Committee of the Reefton Jockey Club met on Wednesday afternoon to consider the coming Winter meeting and whether it was advisable to order the abandonment, or otherwise of.the gathering. It was discussed in all its phases, and finally it was carried by a substantial majority that the meeting be gone oil with on the proposed date.
As a result of Captain Findlay's visit to the aerodrome yesterday, more men are to be put on next week to further improve the 'landing ground. It is understood that the location is now classed as a provincial training ground, and that with further improvements, it will become a permanent landing and training ground,
The committee of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club has approved the programme for the August meeting. As was to be expected, with a big drop in revenue, a substantial reduction has been made in the prizemoney. Every race during the three days has been made to bear a share of the saving, the total stakes for the meeting being £5950, compared with £10,300 la lit year, a total reduction of £4350.
The twenty per/cent cut in prices of admission to the Bowling Club social dance on Friday evening has met the popular requirement of these days. The Club aims at having a large attendance at its aiyiual festival gathering. Though admission charges are being reduced there will be no reduction in the quality of the supper to be provided b> the ladies’ committee while the music by the Black Hand Orchestra, and tlm condition of the floor will lie of the best.

To-morrow eyoning at All Saints’ Church a special commemoration service will be held to celebrate the twenty-first birthday of the Girl Guide Movement in the British, Empire. Girl Guides, in uniform are requested to meet inside the church gates at. 6.45, and past guides are also invited to attend, not in uniform, but wearing their badges. A special programme of service has been printed for the occasion.
A branch of the Women’s Institute has been formed in the Rimu and Woodstock districts, the olficers being elected as follow :—President, Mrs E. Stoop; vice-president, Mrs J. O’Connor ; secretary, Airs E. Lewis. The first meeting was held this week at Himu when there was a good attendance and a very pleasant afternoon was spent. The roll call was a piece of work of special interest, and a dainty aftei'noon tea. was provided. The hostesses' were Miss T). Imvood and Miss V. Boyd.
