Lovelock beat Thomas’ /last year's mile record for running. 'He ran the first, quarter in fifty-seven seconds frantically urging the pacemaker to greater effort and covered the final quarter alone in fifty-nine second’. He thus did half tho distance in 116 seconds. This is unprecedented in a mi/e race, compared to Ladoumergue’s best laps of 122 seconds when he made the world record of 249 1-5 seconds.
