MAGISTRATE’S COURT
CASES HEARD AT HOKITIKA
CIVIL AND TRAFFIC CASES.
Mr AY. Meldrum, S.M., presided at the Magistrate’s Court sitting at Hokitika this morning when the following cases were dealt with.
Civil Cases
Judgment for plaintiff hy default w’as given in tile following cases:—Westlnad Hospital Board v; Alex Campbell. £2 TOs, and costs £1 10s 6d; Charles Pfahlert V. Joseph AYilson £4, and costs £2 16s 6d; A. ,H. Nancekivell v. A. Wilniot £5 13s 6d, and costs £1 10s 6d.
Jn a judgment summons case, E. C. Toohey was ordered to pay J. J. Niven and Co., £9 4s 2d and costs, in deiault 14 days’. T. AV. Butler (Butler and Co.). Me Murdoch), claimed the sum of £29 17s 6d from Robert Williams (Mr Elcoik), being the balance of money due to plaintiff from a cattle deal. Evidence was given by Mrs Butl r, of Matainui, mother of plaintiff. AVil-. Tiain Jeffries, auctioneer of Hokitika; and Thomas Walsh, farmer of Ross. , Judgment was given plaintiff for! the amount claimed, with costs.
Traffic and By-law Breaches,
For driving, a motor. lorry after dark without lights, J. R.. Syme was fined 5s and costs. M. E. Black was charged with failing to keep to the le t of a. traffic dome. He was fined 5s and costs. For riding a cycle, without a light J. Cooper, junr., was fined 5s and costs. A Smith was charged with not parking his car on the lefthand side of the street, and was fined 5s and costs. For driving a. car without lights, F. AV. AVoolhouse was fined os and costs, an d allowed 14 days’ within which to pay.
On Licensed Premises
Three men were charged of being found in the Railway Hotel after hours. There wsa no appearance of defendants, and after evidence by Sergeant King, each was ordered to pay costs.
Faijure to Pay Levy
Alan Wm. Dale (five charges), George Dale (five charges), and George Bansgrove (five charges), were charged with failure to pay the unemployment levy. A. AV. Dale pleaded guilty, saying that he had not been in the position to pay, being out of work. He was fined 5s and costs on the’ first charge and ordered to. pay ebsts 011 the others.
Geo. Dale also pleaded guilty, his defence being the same as the previous defendant. He was fined the same amount, but asked for in default as he had no means of paying. The Magistrate said that in default would follow if not paid.
Bansgrove was convicted and fined 10s on the first charge,- and convicted and discharged on the remainder.
