VILLAGE WRECKED
'JEN HOUSES DISAPPEAR
WHEN HUGE CHASM OPENS
ROME, May 24
An immense chasm, 150 feet wide, in the depths of which could he heard the murmur of waters, opened suddenly in the middle of the village of San to Stefa no and swallowed up ten houses, rendering 200 people homeless. The inhabitants of the village are terror-stricken. They believe that the collapse of their homes is the work of evil spirits, and beseech the parish priest to bless all the roads in their village, which is now in danger of disappearing altogether. The village is built above a number of grottoes, and cracks have recently become visible in many of the houses, to the accompaniment of rumblings. Yesterday a dozen houses in one part of the village collapsed suddenly, fortunately without injuring anyone. Today the great chasm appeared and further destroyed the village, and many other houses are expected to collapse at any minute. The cause of the catastrophe appears to he volcanic, aggravated by the abundant winter rains.
