AUCKLAND HOSPITAL. SUPERINTENDENT APPOINTED

AUCKLAND, May 25. Dr. J. W. Craven, of Birkenhead, Auckland, has been appointed Medical Superintendent of the Auckland Hospital. There were 38 applicants from New Zealand, Australia, and England. The salary is £I2OO a year and a house. Dr.. Craven is 43 years of age. He came to New Zealand in 1026. He served at the Royal \ ictoria Infi.unaiy in Newcastle. He had a* fine war record in the R.A.M.C., receiving the Military Cross and the Croix de Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. After the war he was Deputy Commissioner of MedL cal Services under the Ministry of Pensions La tee- he entered private practice, and then came to New Zealand.

FISHING LAUNCH SINKS.

AUCKLAND, May 25. When running for shelter in the storm, early last evening, the Auckland fishing launch, Mirella, struck on the edge of Goat Island, near Point Rodney, and sank. The crew of three men put off in a dinghy, and reached the mainland, where they got shelter at a settler’s house. This morning, only the mast of the launch was showing.
