The .popular annual seven-a-side football tournament takes place on Cass Square on Friday, June 3rd., when there will be a whole day of breezy Rugby football. This popular gathering is always a favourite one and there is much interest being already shown. The annual meeting of the Westland County Council yesterday, followed on the usual lines, and the election of the Chairman unopposed, a procedure similar to that of the previous year, when Mr Keenan was elected, gave members the opportunity to pay a compliment to the present occupier, Mr James A. Murdoch, whose ability to fill the responsible position is undoubted. As menibcite stated, the corning year promises to be an exceedingly difficult one and the Council will have at its head an able and efficient officer, to. guide the destines through the troublous times. The present term makes the fifth occasion on which Mr Murdoch lias filled the position of Chairman of the Council.

The County Chambers, which have been renovated since the outbreak of fire some weeks ago, are now, in use, and with the work completed have a neat appearance; The bare walls, however, serve to attract notice to the absence of the many framed photographs that once .adorned the walls. These mementoes of one time Councillors and that of the Seddon Ministry, together with the large map of "Westland, now missing, make noticeable the appearance of the spic and span meeting chamber, and it would bo well in view of the coining years if these old photographs could be renewed, and again make their appearance on the walls, keeping the memory green of the stalwarts of the earlier years of service,

The Grey District Local Unemployment Committee resigned in a body yesterday as an indication of their dissatisfaction with the position at present existing jn regard to the allocation of relief funds in the district and with the lack of information from the Dominion Unemployment Board regarding its attitude in the matter. There were present at the meeting of the committee, the Chairman (Mr J. W. Greenslad e , Mayor). Ven. Archdeacon Jermyn, Messrs J. Higgins (Grey County Engineer), W. T. Ogilvie (County Council), A. H, McKane (Returned Soldi,o'’s’ A r-spciation). W. Fisher (West Coast Farmers’ Union), P. J. .McLean (Chamber of Commerce), F, L. Turley (Cobden Town Board), A. J. Fairmaid (Borough Engineer), and the secretary, Mr F. G. Davies (Labour department). The meeting on deciding to resign, resolved that it be left for the chairman to communicate with the Minister of Employment, and the Board an explanation of the Committee’s attitude and action. Prior to the resignations taking effect, a resolution was passed placing on record the Committee’s appreciation of the services rendered, -nd fbp ability rhown by the Secretary (Mr F. G. Davies) who, the chairman stated, had done everything in his powiir’ to promote the interests of the Unemployment Board, the oremp.Oyod and the district generally. At the hearing yesterday at Timaru, when John Thomas Whalley was further remanded on an alleged muruer charge, Inspector Bird informed the ‘Magistrate that the police would be definitely prepared to proceed with the <a.;c- on June Bth. The reason for the further remand was that a great number of inquiries had to be made.

Theft of money from ope of Mr J. i.ow’s motor buses, took place in Greymouth on Tuesday evening. The driver of the bus parked it outside the Opera House, in readiness to convey passengers to Runanga, after the pictures. While he was away, some person entered the bus, and wrenched the locked cash box, containing about £2 10s, from where it had been secured by screws to the side of the bus, and decamped with it.
