GAOL FOR YEAR

SENTENCE FOR COMMUNIST

HAD SEDITIOUS LITERATURE

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, May 24

Twelve months’ imprisonment, with hard labour, was the sentence imposed by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., on Charles Francis Riley, aged thirty-eight years, a Communist, who pleaded guilty to having iir his possession for distribution a booklet entitled “Strike Strategy and Tactics,” which booklet encourages and advises lawlessness, and expresses a seditious intention. “Since you were before the Court fore,” said the Magistrate, “I have taken the trouble to read ‘Strike Strategy and Tactics’ from end to end. It is full of matter written with no other object than to incite certain persons to strike, to resist law and order and generally to cause turmoil in our little country. There is one significant passage near the end, which says that the Red International of Labour Unions fust be informed of all conflicts in this country. You have been convicted before, and despite the fact that the Court has treated you with great leniency, you have consistently ignored the strong sentiment for law and order in this country. The Court lias only one thing to do if you persist in it. Twelve months with hard labour.”
