In reference to the timber industry last week Hon E. A. Ransom pointed out that whereas imports have declined, exports have increased considerably, and the trade is considered to be in a much better position than it has been for homo time. For the first time since 1923 the foreign timber trade promises to be definitely in favour oi New Zealand, the Customs figures for the first quarter of 1932 registered a favourable trade balance of approximately 5,000,000 ft, as compared with an adverse balance of 3,000,000 ft foi the first quarter last year, and an average adverse balance of 6,000,000 ft for the first quarter of the year 1928.1930,

A policeman on his lonely boat not one hundred miles from Hokitika recently heard screams coming from a house. The hour was midnight and everything pointed to the committal of a crime. On investigating, the policeman found that a crime had in reality been committed. The occupants of the house were not followers of the Plunket system and thereby lay the crime. The screaming baby which was the disturber of the poaoe was quickly soothed by the cool policeman, who fortunately knew something of the Plunket system and the application of its ample remedies, The thankful parents of the baby are now keen adherents of the Plunket system and and will be at the dance on Wednesday night, secure jh the knowledge that baby will not awaken before seven o’clock in the morning. Come nnd meet them,

Tho demand for imported butter boxes and cheese crates has not declined to the same extent as other lines but as contracts for many ot these were probably made prior to the 1931 movements against sterling it is thought that the current demand for these products is much smaller than indicated by the trading figures, and with the intense competition developing in the local box trade it is likely that importation of butter boxes and cheese crate shooks for next season will show more marked decline, Tim* her exports amount to 7,426,000 ft for the period are over three times as great as those for the first quarter of 1931, and only slightly below the average exports for thp first quarter of tho 1928-1931 period, In spito of considerable research in Australia to locate timbers suitable 'for butter boxes and attempts to disparage the value of white pine for this purpose, the Commonwealth continues to use New Zealand wood in preference to all others.
