FOR PUBLICATION EXPENSES.

WELLINGTON, May 20

At the meeting of the New Zealand Institute, it was announced that the Carnegie Corporation of New York had granted a thousand dollars towards the Institute’s publication expenses. It was decided, after a keen discussion, that the present election to fellowship was not satisfactory, and it was abolished. In future nominations are to be made annually by the incorporated societies, but nominees are not to be informed of their nomination. The nominations are to be submitted to a special committed which 'shall recommend to the Board of Governors those who should he- invited to accept fellowship. The formation of a National Research Council was decided on by the meeting. As the nucleus of the council tiie Institute wiU appoint five men who miist he of recognised scientific attainments and thoroughly representative. The basic sciences committee was empowered to frame regulations as to the period of office and other matters having to do with the constitution of the Council. The committe will then proceed at once, or from 1 time to time, to co-operate other members to the Council provided the total number does not exceed 50. Officers were elected as follows: — President. Professor H. IV. Soger (Auckland); Vice-Prescient, Mr B. C. Aston (Wellington); Treasurer. Mr M. A. Elliott (Palmerston North): editor and librarian. Professor D. M. Y. Sommerville (Wellington): rejvesont--ative on New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, Mr B. C. Aston : representative on Great Barrier Reef Committee, Mr IV. R. B. Oliver (Wellington).
