A meeting of the committee of the 'Reefton Jockey Club was held on Wednesday evening, Mr E. W. ' Spencer (President-) in the chair. A letter was received from the Nelson Jockey Club asking that the Reefton Club alter the date of its Autumn Meeting, from Apri’. 26th 1933, to April 24th. After some consideration it was considered inadvisable to alter the date. The offer of the Cronadun Tennis Club of the -sum of £4 for the refreshment and tea rooms was declined, the Jockey Club having decided to conduct the rooms themselves. The -Secretary reported that the arrangements had been made with the Railway Department for a train to leave after the races at 5.30 for Greymouth, and this arrangement was approved. It was also decided that the last race of the day be timed to start at 3.55 p.m.

The following case s of notifiable diseases were reported in the Dominion for the week ended May 16th, the number of deaths being given in parentheses:—Scarlet fever, 17 ; diphtheria, 20 interic fever, 6; tuberculosis, 20 (8); influenza, 3; erysipelas, 5; puerperal fever, 9 ; eclampsia, 5 ; tetanus, one; ophtalma neontorum, one; lead poisoning, one; totals, 88 <s). Last week’s totuls were 92 and 13 respectively.

There passed away at his residence Kanieri a well-known resident of the district, in the person of Mr Joseph Singer, a native of Hokitika, in his 56th year. A South African War veteran, Mr Singer was in poor health for some few months pior to his demise. He is survived by his wife, four sons and three daughters, including Mrs M. Hutchison' and Mrs A. Croawell, both of Kanieri, and two brothers, Messrs Jack Singer, of Hokitika, and Frank Singer, of Wellington.

A sudden decline in the number of opossums caught in the last two years is noted in the annual" report of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. Next week being the 2lst. anniversary of the Gir'l Guide movement of the British Empire the local Girl Guides are initiating >.a movement to celebrate the anniversary by carrying out a lionise to house collection for gifts of clothing etc. for the local Unemployment Fund, and it is requested that amy possible assistance be given the collectors in their self imposed ta.sk. It is also proposed at a later date to re-open the relief depot, and in this connection the Women’s Institute have already moved in the matter of making clothing for children and ethers who arc in need. This need during the present- winter promises to be an extensive one and in order to rope with the requirements it, has been decided to hold u. sewing bee at the Hospital Board rooms each week where gon Is will he made up, and where any additional helpers will he gladly welcomed.
