REVIEW URGED

EXPENDITURE BY UNIVERSITY

FINANCE- DROPPING AWAY

DUNEDIN, May 17

A grave warning was issued by the honorary treasurer, Mr L.< Deans 'Ritchie, at a meeting of the Univers ty Council this afternoon against the continuation of the present rate of expenditure. Speaking with emphasis, Mr Ritchie said it was not honest to continue on their present course under full sail. '.He knew it would be deplored by every riiember of the Council if they had seriously to curtail any department of their work. They were losing £IOOO ajl year of their income from investments: Many of their rents, amounting to nearly '£5006, were nr arrears, and would have largely to be written o'ff. Next year they could expect a reduction of at least, £1000 in their income from the Training College, arid probably in a few years time there would be no training college at all.

“It seems to me,” .said Mr P.itc.'.ie, ‘‘that tbe only honest thing to do is to take .stock of our posit on, and, having done that, demand a confeience with .the Government to find out exactly where we stand.”

BUDGET REVISION. Though the Government’s action in reducing by 10 peT cent, the salaries paid, by the University out of outside funds, was distasteful, and .to him wrong, they -should remember that in. view of what had happened to .pther grants,; they could hardly have complained if the Government had cut £SOOO. froth their stat.uto-ry grant of £15,000. But quite la part from the effect of the recent legislation, ad(.|. e u the treasurer, he felt he must emphasise the fa-ct that it was not right that they should go on without trying to ascertain where they s.orcJ.' They must define: their and revise their 'budget accordingly. "
