SINGAPORE BASIC PAYMENTS

Hon. G. Forbes stated to-day that the Government had decided not to accept the recommendation of the National Expenditure Commission that the New Zealand naval defence force should be transferred to the contra! of the British Government. It was intended to carry on under the present system. ■Referring to the Commis-ion’s recommendation that the expenditure on Singapore should be curtailed, Mr Forbes said the Government did not intend to make any reduction at present in the annual payment/ -which already had been reduced from £ l9 - 000 to £IOO,OOO. It was intended to keep up that payment in the meantime. The Government, he said, had a definite assurance that Singapore ha-e would be completed.
