Since the outbreak of fire in the Count}- Chambers a few weeks ago, carpenters and l painters have been busily engaged in renewing and renovating the structure. , The work had been so far advanced that the large room was used yesterday for a polling booth as- usual. The deatli occurred at the Grey Rivver Hospital early yesterday morning of Mrs Bridget Hennessy, a native of County Clare, Ireland, aged ! -69 years. The late Mrs Hennessy resided for 37 years at Westport, where her husband pre-deceased her some twelve years ago. but for the past seven years she had lived with her daughter Mrs C. Garforth, Greymouth. She is survived by a family of four daughters, Mesdames Garforth (Greymouth), Moore and McGee (Wellington) and Miss Hennessy (Christchurch), and three sons, Thomas and William (Nelson) and John (Otira).

It is some few years since an amateur operatic society ha-s functioned in Hokitika, but lovers of music will appreciate the fact that the society has been revised, and will shortly produce “Merrie England.” The re formation of this society has filled a muenneeded and long-felt want, and, being under expert organisation and direction, should prove both a benefit and asset to the town.
