An example of the fixed determination with which some men are seeking work in these times, of stress is revealed by the arrival in Hokitika of two men who have tramped from Dunedin. Leaving the southern city over a fortnight ago, they traversed the province, crossing the ranges by the Haast' Pass, and thence travelling north until they reached Hokitika. It is their intention to push on round to Nelson. During their journey, the men have sought work on all ..sides, but so far their quest has been without reward.

The very heavy seas experienced on tlio Greymouth bar during the past two days have had effect on the piles in the southern breakwater extension, for, yesterday morning it was found that two of them had disappeared. Fortunately, they were centre piles, and no damage was clone, with the exception of their loss, Had they been outside ones it is probable that part of the staging would have been lost. The assistant Harbour Engineer, Mr 1). C. Milne, stated that he could not as yet account for the piles being so affected by tire seas, as they hacl been driven only eight months, and were estimated to last a year or eight een months. He suspected, however, that they had been eaten away by tumlo iborer), and thus easily snapped off by the heavy seas. He stated that lie would probably be able to find the exact cause of their breaking off, when thev were washed ashore.
