NOVEL CIIRYSANTBEMUM

ißy Telegraph —Per Press A ssociation)

WANGANUI, May 2

Interesting sidelights on chrysanthemum growing were disclosed by Mr VV. J. Guildford, secretary of the Wanganui Suburban 'Horticultural Society, !;o-day, when .describing some of the unusual blooms which are exhibited in the society’s annual show jn the Drill Hall. Although there are a large number of chrysanthemum growers in Wanganui only one true ’■sport’’ has been produced, and, curiously, this bloom made its appearance in 'the garden oi a novice grower. Mr Dalziell. Mr Guildford stated thait a professional grower in Melbourne, who made a '.speciality of propagating new varieties, had noticed that when a '"sport” was observed it usually, indeed almost invariably, appealed on the south side of tne huso. The Wanganui “sport’’ has appeared oil tlhe south side of the "Edrih Uavr'.l’ plant which. lias ’.attracted so much attention in horticultural circles in New Zealand. . Mr Guildford considers that the red Tsport’’ which lias been discovered can be propagated by tile usual practice of layering, and he i-s hoped ul bha't two other leads which seem likely w.ll either produce plants allied to flic discovery, or at least pl'ants which will bear blooms different from the parent strain. Already inquiries have been received from various parts of New Zealand regarding the new “sport.” Mr Guildford stated tha't !the plant had been given by the owner to the Wanganui Suburban Horticultural Society to dispose of as was thought best.
