HONOLULU TRIAL VERDICT TO BE CONTESTED. (United .Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) 0; HONOLULU, April 30. A The four deiendants in tlie Joseph 'lvahahawai lynching case have been convicted of manslaughter by the jury, with a plea of leniency. The maximum penalty lor mansmu b i.tei' is ten years’: imprisonment. _ Those convicted are ; Lieut. 9 homas Massie, Mrs Granville Fortescue, js. o. Lord, and Albert Jones. T hey will: be sentenced on May 6. Mrs Massie wept on her husbands shoulder as the verdict was announced.
Mi'S Fortescue took it calmly, but she was .visibly shaken, she having been confident of acquittal. The naval, Lord, passed the o her nu\ui, Jones, a piece of currency, evidently paying a bet on the verdict. The defendants are remanded in the custody of the Navy. The defence gave notice of a motion for a new trial, and announced that they will appeal if that is domed. --4 Many residents rushed up and shook ■' hanay, with the defendants, expressing sympathy. One prominent woman civic ’folder kissed all thfi defendants warmly* A Honolulu resident writing to a' iGreymouth relative states that the Uniteu 'States Navy people put up 40,000 dollars (approximately £8,000) to bring five lawyers 'from the United States for the defendants ■ in the above case. One of the lawyers, Mr Darrovv, is stated to 'be the most capable lawyer practising in the United States "O-day in this class of eases.
