An increase in the number of cases of diphtheria during the next few years ivas prophesied in his annual report to the North Canterbury Hospital Board by the pathologist, Dr A. Be Pearson. Preventive inoculation against this disease, which for many years has been systematically carried out in the United States and also more recently in certain parts of Great Britain, has never been enthusiastically received in New Zealand,” said Dr Pearson. ‘‘As a result a large population is growing unprotected by natural or acquired immunity, and it would seem seasonable to suppose that this disease will greatly increase jn numbers and in virulence in the next few years. In the past year we have had definite outbreaks of typhoid fever infections, and more recently, a small • epidemic of infantile paralysis. Epidemics of this nature throw a great amount of work on to the staff of a hospital laboratory, not so much with the actual cases of the disease as in in vest'gations to exclude suspected cases.
