A HURRICANE
AT NEW HEBRIDES. CAUSES MUCH DAMAGE. (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, April 28. A Vila, New Hebrides, message states a cyclone on tlie nights of 25th and 26th unroofed houses and stores. Lighters were sunk in Vila harbour and trading cutters driven ashore. Inter-Island shipping was forced to shelter. Much damage was done to plantations. Burns Philip steamer “Malinoa” was driven on the reef at the Island of Abba. Passengers, provisions and mail were landed safely. Attempts to refloat failed. It is an exceptionally treacherous coast. The sea is now calm. The damage to northern islands is unknown, but it is anticipated to be severe on the eastern and southern coasts. Vila is on the sheltered western side and thus escaped the full force of the hurricane.
